Why is the use of scrubs, peels, or chemical exfoliants (AHA/BHA) strictly prohibited for the first 3 days after laser hair removal?

Laser treatment creates microscopic heat damage and sensitivity in the upper layer of the skin. In the first few days after the procedure, the skin tries to regenerate and soothe itself. During this process, applying mechanical peels (loofah, exfoliating scrub) or chemical exfoliants such as glycolic acid and salicylic acid irritates the fresh, healing skin layer. This irritation can lead to the formation of dark spots, known as “post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation,” disrupt skin integrity, and increase the risk of infection. These products should be avoided until the skin has completely calmed down (at least 1 week).
