What is “Shock Loss,” which is seen in the first week after hair transplantation, and how do hair treatments affect this process?

Update date: 11 June 2026

Shock shedding is the sudden loss of almost 70-80% of transplanted hair follicles between the 2nd and 4th weeks after a hair transplant operation. Although this may frighten patients, it is a completely normal and physiological process. The reason is that the hair follicles, due to the temporary lack of oxygen (ischemia-reperfusion trauma) they experience during harvesting and transplantation, shed their hair shafts and enter a resting phase to protect themselves; the roots remain alive under the skin. PRP and nourishing mesotherapies started during this period ensure that the roots emerge much faster from the shock phase, directly supporting the growth of thicker, fuller, and healthier new hair strands upwards.
